Primitive elevators were used as far back as
1743 but it was Elisha Otis who started to manufacture the first elevators
for public use in New York in 1852.
Eventually other big manufacturers joined Otis and some smaller
companies to offer elevator equipment as well.
Technically, there are two types of elevators "Hydraulic" and
"Traction".
- Hydraulic elevators are
found in parkades and buildings with 5 to 7 floors.
- Hi-rise and mid-rise
buildings require traction elevators.
- Freight elevators and
house elevators can be either hydraulic or traction.
